According to the program curators, this year’s “Cinema Under the Stars” invites viewers to experience the full spectrum of summer emotions, so in the coming days, carefully selected films and accompanying entertainment await in the courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Dukes.
Cinema and the Experiences That Accompany It
The choice of the opening drama “Call Me by Your Name” (dir. Luca Guadagnino) was not accidental. According to program curator Benita Paplauskaitė, this film brought Timothée Chalamet his first Oscar nomination and gave viewers “one of the most memorable cinematic summers, precisely capturing that brief period in life when days seem endless, and one encounter divides time into ‘before’ and ‘after’.”
In the following screenings under the starry sky, the festival will invite you to dive into the world of luxurious yachts, jazz, and endless summer in the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (dir. Anthony Minghella). This screening will begin with the sounds of American and late 50s Italian jazz. “It is one of the most stylish summer thrillers, igniting both mind and blood. Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow masterfully create a hypnotic illusion of luxury and flawless life, where image becomes more important than reality,” B. Paplauskaitė piques curiosity.
In August, the audience awaits the cult “Dirty Dancing” (dir. Emile Ardolino). Before this film screening, viewers will not only see a performance by professional dancers but will also have the chance to learn the basics of salsa to the legendary song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” The organizers remind that the duo of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey on screen still reminds us how intoxicating the first step toward a bolder version of oneself can be.
Those seeking gourmet experiences will be interested in the summer comedy “Sideways” (dir. Alexander Payne), accompanied by a special tasting. By purchasing a special ticket, viewers will be able to taste a three-wine menu balanced for the film in real time, alongside the characters on screen. Program curator Karolis Žukas reveals that this seemingly modest comedy gradually unfolds as one of the wisest films about failure and second chances.
Summer Heat and Intrigue
The festival screen will also be full of intriguing adventures. On the last evening of July, viewers will see Paul Thomas Anderson’s famous “Boogie Nights”, which K. Žukas calls a grand American epic: “The film creates a party you don’t want to leave, and its finale touches the heart.”
Michelangelo Antonioni’s masterpiece “The Adventure” introduces the search for a missing woman in the Mediterranean, after which the little-known actress Monica Vitti became a world-class star. Meanwhile, the cult “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton takes you to a secret utopia on a Thai island, which, according to K. Žukas, gradually turns from a holiday adventure into almost a thriller, and in the finale – complete surrealism.
Those enjoying everyday cinematic magic are welcome to Éric Rohmer’s “A Summer’s Tale”, which reveals summer holiday romances, human weaknesses, and charming indecision.
The “Cinema Under the Stars” festival will be solemnly closed on August 6 in the Great Courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Dukes by Paolo Sorrentino’s masterpiece “The Great Beauty”.
