Telegraf publication describes conflicting information about a possible ceasefire. The publication relies on “Ukrainska Pravda,” “Suspilne,” “RBK Ukraine,” and its own sources within Ukraine’s security and defense structures.
“Ukrainska Pravda” reports that information about the ceasefire regime was provided by sources in several brigades operating on different front lines and a high-ranking official in the security and defense structures. However, according to them, it was a proposal from the Ukrainian side, and a final agreement had not yet been reached at that time.
Meanwhile, “Suspilne,” citing a source in the Ukrainian President’s office, reports that the Defense Forces have not received orders to cease combat operations on the front line. US representatives separately discussed a possible ceasefire in the air with Kyiv and Moscow ahead of Witkoff and Kushner’s visit to Russia.
Sources from “Suspilne” in the US Congress stated that there is an agreement on a ceasefire from September 5–8, but its format was not specified. Meanwhile, representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces command, the Territorial Defense Forces Northern Command, and commanders of two units operating on different front lines denied that combat operations would cease on the front during these days.
Possible only ceasefire in the air?
Sources from “RBK Ukraine” in the President’s office also stated that Kyiv is awaiting Moscow’s response regarding a possible ceasefire in the air during diplomatic meetings.
The source emphasized that the discussion was specifically about stopping air strikes. The US side was supposed to discuss this issue with Russia.
“This is an established practice during diplomatic meetings: we do not attack them, and they do not attack Ukraine. This applies to a specific geographical area and a set period,” the source explained.
However, despite talks about a possible ceasefire, Russian attacks have not stopped.
On the night of September 5, Russia struck several Ukrainian cities. After midnight, during an attack in Boryspil, Kyiv region, two people were injured, and a nine-story residential building was damaged.
This means that at least during the first hours of the possible ceasefire regime, Moscow did not stop the strikes.
Did Russia adhere to previous ceasefires?
“Telegraf” also recalls previous attempts to agree on a temporary ceasefire. The publication emphasizes that none of these ceasefires were maintained, and Russia violated the agreements.
In April this year, during Easter, Russia reportedly agreed to a ceasefire, but it was violated multiple times.
The three-day ceasefire from May 9–11, announced on the occasion of the so-called Victory Parade held in Moscow, was also violated. “Telegraf” notes that this began in the first hours – Kharkiv was struck, more than 120 combat clashes were recorded within 24 hours, and Russian forces, taking advantage of the reduced fighting, conducted troop rotations and deployed reserves to the front.
In 2025, so-called “energy ceasefires” were announced – an agreement to stop strikes on energy infrastructure. They were supposed to last 30 days from March 18. Although at that time there were fewer large-scale strikes on energy facilities, a complete ceasefire did not occur.

Visits of S. Witkoff and J. Kushner
This weekend, US President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will visit Moscow, and later Kyiv.
They are expected to arrive in Ukraine on Sunday, September 6. The US side has already coordinated the travel details with V. Zelensky’s team.
On September 4, D. Trump stated that the main goal of his envoys’ trip is to “end the war.” According to the US president, they will present an appropriate proposal to Russia.
V. Zelensky, in turn, said that the main goal of the negotiations is to find real ways to end the war. The Ukrainian side is awaiting proposals from S. Witkoff and J. Kushner after their meetings in Moscow.
It is still unclear whether talks about a ceasefire mean an agreement to stop fighting across the entire front or just a temporary restraint from air strikes. The answer to this question should become clear once the US envoys’ visit begins.
