Our country’s national team will play a crucial qualifying match against the Serbs in Klaipėda on November 26. But a day earlier, „Žalgiris“ will fight against the „Real“ club in Madrid.
The Kaunas team is represented by a group of potential national team candidates. What does „Žalgiris“ intend to do if it receives a request from the association „Lithuanian Basketball“?
„We all know the situation in which the Lithuanian basketball national team and Lithuanian basketball are. We understand everything, we are ready to help, but there is still a month and a half or two months until the ‘window’ and the season has not yet started,“ P. Jankūnas did not rush. „We do not know what the situation with the players will be and it is still difficult to comment on what the situation with the players will be, who will come and who will not, what coach will be in the national team. There is still time and I think we will answer all these questions as the FIBA window approaches.“

P. Jankūnas was also asked about the Vilnius-based and former „Rytas“ players forming the core of „Žalgiris“. Currently, the Kaunas team is represented by Vilnius natives Ąžuolas Tubelis, Deividas Sirvydis, Marekas Blaževičius, Dovydas Giedraitis, as well as former representatives of the capital club Jonas Valančiūnas, Arnas Butkevičius.

The „Žalgiris“ leader was asked whether the Kaunas spirit has faded in the temporary capital’s club and whether this would have been imaginable in the times when P. Jankūnas himself still wore the „Žalgiris“ uniform and competed against „Rytas“?
„In the old days, everything was different,“ P. Jankūnas smiled. „One true Kaunas native, Marius Grigonis, has returned, I think we all know his vocalness, his voice, and courage. But seriously speaking, everything is fine. We choose players who suit us best, who can achieve the goals we set,“ P. Jankūnas replied.
