The decision by Rome, which sparked condemnation from Madrid and other EU countries, to initially suspend the Schengen Agreement, which guarantees free movement, for Spain for one month prompted Madrid to take mirror measures against travelers arriving from Italy.
On Tuesday, the Italian Ministry of the Interior stated in a release that the extension of controls was necessary following an assessment by the border security committee.
“There remains a significant threat to internal security, as well as potential dangers related to possible terrorist infiltration,” the Ministry of the Interior wrote.
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday that border controls for travelers arriving from Italy, introduced on August 8, will be applied until October 8, noting that the reasons for the checks remain unchanged.

In its statement, the ministry noted that “if these circumstances change, the planned time may be adjusted.”
Italy and Spain do not share a land border, but controls were introduced at sea and airports used by transport service providers from the other country.
The visa-free Schengen area includes 29 European countries that have officially abolished controls at their common borders.
