As reported by FOCUS, scientists evaluated 22 studies on aerosols and bioaerosols generated by flushing water in toilets. The studies covered various types of toilets – from regular to vacuum toilets on airplanes.

In some studies, scientists deliberately mixed bacteria or viruses into the flushing water. In others, particles were measured during normal water flushing after using the toilet. Among the microorganisms studied were bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Clostridioides difficile, as well as adenoviruses and noroviruses.
