Gideon Sa’ar is the first Israeli foreign minister to visit Ecuador in 44 years. He will also attend the inauguration of Colombia’s right-wing president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella on Friday.

G. Sa’ar recently also spoke with Peru’s president-elect, conservative Keiko Fujimori.

“Through determined and systematic diplomatic efforts, we have managed to strengthen and renew Israel’s relations with many Latin American countries,” said G. Sa’ar.

A. de la Espriella, a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has stated that he will move Colombia’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Apart from the U.S., only a few smaller countries have taken such a step.

This marks a sharp turn compared to outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro – a left-wing politician who severed ties with Israel over the country’s war in the Gaza Strip.

Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal and undivided capital, but due to Palestinian claims to the city, this status is not recognized by most of the international community.

Argentine President Javier Milei is another open supporter of Israel, also promising to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem.

However, this change has not yet occurred – it is reported that the reason is disagreements over plans by an Israeli company to carry out drilling operations in the Falkland Islands, which are controlled by the United Kingdom but claimed by Argentina, which calls them the Malvinas Islands.

Israel’s efforts to strengthen its position in Latin America come as the country faces sharp criticism in much of the world, including major European countries, over the devastating war in the Gaza Strip, started in response to a large-scale Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
