Iran condemns the US attack on the unfinished power plant, TATENA calls for restraint

The US and Iran have been exchanging increasingly strong blows for several days. Washington carried out new airstrikes on Sunday in response to an attack in which two US soldiers were killed in Jordan on Friday. Tehran’s Atomic Energy Organization reported that US forces on Sunday “aggressively and brutally attacked the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant with several missiles, an act contrary to international law,” according to a statement broadcast by state television.

The UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it is investigating these reports and noted that the plant “is in a very early stage of construction, and when the IAEA last visited, there were no nuclear materials present.”

Although the incident is not believed to “pose any radiological danger,” IAEA Director Rafael Grossi once again called for “military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related facilities,” the agency reported on the social network X.

Iran’s nuclear program has long been a major point of contention between Tehran and the West; this issue has also been an obstacle in negotiations aimed at ending the current war.

While foreign states, including the US and Israel, suspect Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, Tehran has always maintained that its program is peaceful, though it insists on its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes.
