„I also saw a positive step from opposition parties towards this idea. It is really a good idea, because what we set, we hope, will be continued by others, no matter which party wins the elections,“ the minister said.
As BNS wrote, even before taking office, in May, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said he intends to initiate an agreement between parties and state institutions on demography this year. The opposition conservatives have prepared their own version of such a document.
„We talk about defense and security, we agree on a common position and directions, and that is how we strengthen ourselves as a state. Likewise, when talking about family policy, about demography, I think it is very important for us to agree and look in the same direction,“ emphasized I. Ruginienė.
Earlier this week, she presented the prepared family support package to the prime minister, but its details have not yet been publicly disclosed.
The minister insisted that she believes the benefits of the prepared measures will be long-term.
„Demographic indicators probably will not improve in a year or two. Therefore, we see a more sustainable process that requires longer-term results. I think the fruits of our proposed package will certainly be reaped not only by our Government but also by future generations,“ I. Ruginienė told „Dienos tema“.

The Government has committed in its program to „curb the impact of prices“ by increasing residents’ incomes faster. Free meals for primary school students are planned in all schools, a larger informal education package, and support for families purchasing their first home.
BNS wrote that earlier President Gitanas Nausėda compared demographic problems in Lithuania to a „ticking bomb.“
Data from the State Data Agency shows that the permanent population in Lithuania decreased by 0.1% over the year, and in 2025 a record low number of babies were born – 17.5 thousand, which is 1.6 thousand (8.4%) fewer than in 2024.
The agency has also forecasted that by 2100, just over 2 million people will live in Lithuania.
