“Our idea – both politicians’ and administration’s – is simply to level social exclusion. So that not only those who can buy a car can travel, but also grandmothers or residents living somewhere in the outskirts. Public transport is part of their mobility, and some grandmothers really cannot afford to buy a ticket every time,” said Darius Varnas, mayor of Ukmergė district, to BNS.
According to him, it will cost the municipality about 200 thousand euros per year.
According to D. Varnas, electric buses were the main condition for introducing free public transport in the city. Currently, according to the mayor, they are already running on the streets of Ukmergė.
“The next stage – after simply examining and arranging routes in the district – we will also offer residents, most likely having allocated certain funds in next year’s budget, we are still recalculating them now, and most likely we will launch it in the district as well. Simply, all public transport in Ukmergė will become free for residents,” said the mayor.
According to him, ten new buses and their infrastructure cost about 3.6 million euros, of which 1.47 million euros is EU support.
