Instead of celebrations, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Spain on Wednesday, protesting against the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ceuta. They demanded solutions and blamed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for the government’s actions.
In Madrid, according to officials, about 50,000 protesters gathered. After the demonstration ended, an AP news agency journalist heard gunshots and explosions. The Spanish newspaper “El Pais” reported that the police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Large protests also took place in Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville.
Waving Spanish flags, the demonstrators shouted: “United Ceuta will never be defeated,” “Sánchez to jail,” and “Intruders go home!” referring to the thousands of illegal migrants still in the city.
