In Jurbarkas, nearly 5 million euros will be invested to adapt the banks of the Nemunas, Mituva, and Imsrė rivers for visiting

Jurbarkas mayor Skirmantas Mockevičius told BNS that water tourism in the area is not yet sufficiently developed due to the lack of dedicated infrastructure.

“The project is very important because it will arrange and connect the Nemunas River with the city, with the city infrastructure. Along the entire coast from the Nemunas estuary with Mituva, there is only a small port for small boats. During this project, a huge quay will be built, which will allow boats arriving on the Nemunas to temporarily dock,” S. Mockevičius told BNS.

According to the mayor, the place will be intended for city residents and guests arriving not only by water transport. In addition, on the other side of the Mituva River, an industrial port will be arranged: “One side will be industrial, the other – recreational.”

According to S. Mockevičius, it is expected to attract larger flows of travelers to Jurbarkas, which would enliven recreational navigation on the Nemunas.

“Traveling from Kaunas to Nida, Klaipėda, this would be a longer stopover place where you could stop, there will be space with showers, toilets, as well as rest and dining areas,” the mayor said.

“It will be a beautiful place for travelers, and also a place of entertainment for the people of Jurbarkas, because many people walk here, it is a unique natural place to watch the sunset by the Nemunas, because the nature and the place are really beautiful and need to be used properly,” he added.

According to the municipality, the coastal areas and adjacent quays will be arranged, parking lots for cars and campers will be installed, pedestrian paths with lighting, leisure zones, children’s playgrounds and sports infrastructure, and rest areas.

The coastal adaptation works should be completed by September 2029. The mayor hopes that the project will be implemented earlier. Currently, design works are being completed.

The project is valued at 4.9 million euros, of which 4.2 million euros will be financed by EU funds, and 0.7 million euros from the municipal budget.

The Jurbarkas district municipality administration and the Central Project Management Agency signed the financing agreement on June 19.
