In Germany, two airport workers died from malaria transmitted by a mosquito that got into a plane

Airport officials previously stated that one employee died and a total of six were infected.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that the likely cause was a mosquito on the plane.

The other four infected employees are being treated in hospital, an airport spokesperson said.

According to RKI, the last airport-related malaria outbreak in Germany occurred in 2023. As the disease is rare, diagnosis can be delayed, increasing the likelihood of severe symptoms.

The captured mosquitoes will be sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, for genetic testing to learn more about their origin.

Malaria, caused by parasites spread by anopheles mosquitoes, can manifest with symptoms such as nausea, headache, and severe bouts of fever and chills.

The disease causes hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, mostly in sub-Saharan African countries.

Treatment exists, and with early diagnosis, patients usually make a full recovery.
