„During the two hours, we heard a lot of different evaluations, discussion questions, and thoughts, and listening to them really raised quite a few. I think this meeting of ours should help achieve the goal that is enshrined in the Government program, for which a group of parliamentarians has been created, which is to restore diplomatic representation between China and Lithuania and normalize relations,“ he emphasized.
According to I. Vėgėlė, the meeting was attended by Fang Mei, adviser to the Chinese mission to the European Union.
The parliamentarian said that more information about the meeting and the issues discussed will be revealed on Thursday.
As BNS wrote, two members of the temporary group “For the normalization of diplomatic relations with China to the level of EU member states” went to the Belgian capital to meet with Chinese representatives.
I. Vėgėlė and R. Jonas Jankūnas wanted half of the trip expenses to be covered from the funding allocated for business trips, and the other half from parliamentary funds, but the Seimas board did not approve such a business trip.
Despite this, I. Vėgėlė indicated that he went to Brussels at his own expense.
A group of six parliamentarians in the Seimas, aiming to investigate and eliminate the reasons hindering the restoration of diplomatic relations with China, was established last December.

At that time, it was stated that the goal was to seek the restoration of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and China to the level currently maintained by most EU member states.
Earlier, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said that not all parliamentary initiatives can sometimes help Vilnius restore relations with Beijing.
At the same time, the Presidency said on Tuesday that the Seimas members meeting with Chinese representatives do not represent Lithuania’s position.
As BNS reported, the ruling party itself actively talks about normalizing relations with China to such a level of diplomatic representation as other EU countries have, but so far this has not yielded practical results.
Bilaterial relations between the countries deteriorated in 2021 when Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a Taiwanese representative office in the country.
