Demonstrations began as the president prepared meetings with top military commanders for two days, with the media speculating that he might be seeking a replacement for the military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

“There were many consultations yesterday and today. Of course, I hear what people are saying,” Zelensky said in an evening address, adding that he had spoken with both O. Syrskyi and M. Fedorov.

“Decisions regarding the military will be made,” he stated.

In Kyiv, AFP news agency journalists saw protesters clapping and banging cardboard posters, which had become a symbol of last summer’s anti-government protests, and chanting “shame” and “Fedorov”.
