Audra quickly strengthened after becoming a hurricane on Sunday, fueled by warm waters far from the coast, the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

“Karina” was about 1,642 kilometers west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, with a maximum sustained hurricane wind speed of 64.7 m/s. The hurricane was moving west.
No coastal watches or warnings have been issued, but waves are expected to reach Mexico and likely Southern California. Further strengthening is possible on Monday, followed by intensity fluctuations.
Elsewhere in the Pacific, tropical storm “Lowell” was about 1,376 kilometers east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. The storm’s maximum sustained wind speed is 27 m/s, moving west.
Meteorologists said “Lowell” could become a hurricane Monday evening or Tuesday. The storm poses no direct threat to land, but the NHC reported that later this week “Lowell” may approach the Hawaiian Islands.
