Winds blowing across the Linkou and Taoyuan plains to the southwest of Taipei warm up as they descend into the densely populated region.

“During the season, we often encounter such a southwest wind pattern,” explained Zeng Zhao-cheng. “So this (weather) pattern is not very rare, it just set a record this time.”

On Wednesday afternoon in Taipei, the temperature reached 38.3 degrees Celsius – the highest reading since the previous record recorded on May 28, 2021.

In the nearby city of Jilong, the thermometer rose to 37.3 degrees Celsius, matching the record set on May 25, 2007.

Temperatures are forecast to start falling from Thursday.
