German minister: Russia responsible for drone incident at airport

NATO member Germany, supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia, has long accused Moscow of conducting hybrid attacks, including espionage and sabotage. Russia denies the accusations.

Suspicious drone flights over military and industrial sites had been recorded in Germany for several months, but the incident in Leipzig on the night of August 5 caused great concern because the drone found there was carrying explosives.

The police used a robot to neutralize the device found near a Ukrainian cargo plane, and a few weeks later, another drone with traces of explosives was reportedly found near the airport.

This airport plays an important role in transporting military goods, including cargo for the German army and NATO allies, and also serves as a base for the Ukrainian company Antonov Airlines.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz later stated that Germany is increasingly “in the crosshairs of hybrid attack perpetrators.”

However, Berlin has so far refrained from direct accusations against Russia, speaking only of possible involvement by “foreign states.”
