Public opinion polls have long shown a comfortable lead for the four left-wing bloc parties over the alliance of four parties led by conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which also includes the far-right party “Sweden Democrats”.
However, in the final days of the campaign, the difference between the camps narrowed to a tie.
Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats, who governed this Scandinavian country for most of the 20th century, promised to strengthen the welfare state.
She aims to help households struggling with rising prices if the left-wing parties win a majority on Sunday.
Meanwhile, outgoing conservative Prime Minister U. Kristersson promised to improve everyday life for Swedes. According to him, the stricter measures introduced by the government against organized crime and immigration have already yielded the expected results.
U. Kristersson has governed for the past four years supported by the far-right “Sweden Democrats”. He promised ministerial posts in the cabinet to this anti-immigration party if the right-wing bloc wins the elections.
Polling stations will close at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. Lithuanian time). At the same time, exit polls will be announced, and the first reliable results are expected a few hours later.
