Speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, F. Merz said that the “strategic initiative group” established by the two countries will consider how to strengthen deterrence in the future.

“In addition to this work on developing a common doctrine, German conventional forces will participate this year in the French military’s nuclear exercises,” he said.
“This complements our nuclear participation and deterrence within the NATO structure, which we continue to adhere to,” added the German Chancellor.
Speaking about Ukraine, F. Merz said that Germany will also participate in “exercises to be held in the autumn, organized on the initiative of France.”

“Together we will determine exactly what form this participation will take,” he said.
These exercises will be held as the so-called Coalition of the Willing begins to operate. This group of Ukraine’s allies held a meeting in Paris this week, attended by both E. Macron and F. Merz.
At that meeting, E. Macron stated that international forces for Ukraine, which would be deployed after the end of hostilities, will conduct exercises in neighboring countries in the coming months “to confirm our deployment plans and show that we are ready.”
