In a four-minute recording made in 2025, a whiskered shark can be seen swimming past a great white shark near an artificial reef several times. The camera was attached to the whiskered shark’s dorsal fin.

“Our video clearly shows a great white shark at least 3 meters long,” said researcher Stephen Kajiura.
His team studies the behavior of sharks living in southern Florida using cameras attached to their fins.
“We decided to start with the whiskered shark because they live nearby, don’t swim far, and spend much of their time just on the bottom. But what are the chances that such a shark would accidentally film another shark – and such an impressive great white at that?” wondered S. Kajiura.
An unexpected encounter
“This rare footage allows us to see the interaction of two very different sharks through the eyes of a shark,” said S. Kajiura.
The most interesting thing is that the sharks did not just meet for a moment. They swam around the reef for about four minutes and passed by each other several times.

The camera was attached to a special tag that recorded not only the image but also three-dimensional movement data. After a set time, the tag automatically detached and floated to the surface so researchers could retrieve it.
The recording was almost lost
This time, the researchers had to worry quite a bit. The tag initially did not transmit its location, so the team thought the device was lost.
However, after four days, it unexpectedly sent a signal. The researchers found the camera on a nearby beach where it had been washed ashore by the sea.
It turned out that the device was almost destroyed – tire tracks from a beach tractor were just a few centimeters away from it.
Fortunately, the camera survived and the scientists were able to review the footage.
“We all gathered around my computer and watched the footage. When we saw the great white shark appear not just once but several times, we couldn’t believe it. And seeing it all from another shark’s perspective was even more surreal,” said team member Genevieve Sylvester.

“It was truly an unforgettable moment for our entire team,” she added.
