According to Luxembourg Airport, flights were suspended as a precautionary measure due to security concerns when unauthorized unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were detected around and above the airport. Due to the closure, a plane arriving from London was diverted to Liège in Belgium. One passenger told Luxembourg Times that the pilot informed passengers that drones were still flying over the airport.

Flights resumed early on the morning of September 19. So far, officials have not been able to determine where the drones were launched from.
This incident occurred at a time when leaders of various European countries warned about increasing hybrid warfare threats from Russia. On September 17, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that intelligence assessments indicate that Russia may carry out drone attacks against countries supporting Ukraine in the coming months. Officials from France, Lithuania, and Finland also echoed Tusk’s warnings.
On September 1, the German government officially accused Russian intelligence of attempting to carry out a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August. This was the first time Berlin directly blamed Moscow for the incident, during which drones loaded with explosives were found at the airport. Their target appeared to be a cargo plane of the Ukrainian company Antonov, used to transport military equipment.

Since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Luxembourg has provided Ukraine with 340 million euros (390 million US dollars) in aid, according to Statista data published in May 2026. It is one of the smallest European countries – in 2026, it had a population of 689,345 people.
The city of Luxembourg is also one of the official capitals of the European Union, hosting the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Investment Bank.
