European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday proposed Canada become the first associate member of the EU. This proposal was made with the participation of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is to address EU lawmakers on Thursday.
M. Carney seeks closer ties with the Community, with Ottawa increasingly involved in the trade war with the US.
U. von der Leyen also proposed that Canada join the future European Security Council, the creation of which she has mentioned.
Icelandic voters last month rejected the possibility of renewing negotiations on EU membership that were suspended 13 years ago, thus at least for now burying the issue.
„I regret the decision in the referendum in Iceland, but of course, we respect it,“ said M. Kos.
„I think it would be great if Iceland sat with us in Brussels at one table when we discuss the future of the European Union,“ she added.
