Elected President of the Lithuanian Banks Association

For the past three and a half years, V. Vasiliauskas has led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) North Baltic Countries Office, representing these countries on the Fund’s Board.

“I am glad to be able to apply the experience I have gained working in an international environment back in Lithuania and contribute to the development of a strong, resilient, and competitive financial system,” said V. Vasiliauskas.

From 2011 to 2021, V. Vasiliauskas headed the Bank of Lithuania, and on January 1, 2015, when Lithuania adopted the euro, he also became a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank.

Before becoming the head of the Bank of Lithuania, V. Vasiliauskas worked as a lawyer and legal expert in the private sector, served as Deputy Minister of Finance, earlier led the Tax Department of the Ministry of Finance, and worked at the State Tax Inspectorate.

V. Vasiliauskas is a long-time lecturer at Vilnius University and continues his academic activities at this higher education institution to this day.

The LBA thanks Dr. Eivile Čipkutė, who has led the organization until now, for her cooperation; she is leaving her position as her term ends.

“I am grateful for the joint work in developing dialogue with the public, policymakers, and institutions. This experience coincided with the challenges of a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic environment, so the period was exceptionally dynamic and professionally very meaningful,” said E. Čipkutė.

The LBA president is elected for five years by the general meeting of members, with no limit on the number of terms.

The LBA is a non-profit organization representing the Lithuanian banking and financial sector at the national and international levels. Its mission is to contribute to constructive relationships based on mutual understanding and trust among clients, supervisory authorities, and market participants.

Currently, the association unites 13 banks and financial sector companies operating in Lithuania. The LBA advocates for a more sustainable Lithuanian economy, a strong and competitive banking sector, greater financial services penetration in society, and consistent development of the banking sector and financial market.

Operating since 1991, the association is a member of the European Banking Federation and the European Money Markets Institute.
