Due to the registry leak scandal, the opposition is forming a commission, threatening interpellations against Ruginiene and the ministers

About the decision to create a commission, opposition liberal and conservative leaders Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, and the head of the democratic faction Lukas Savickas announced on Thursday in the Seimas.

The opposition raised about 20 questions, most of which were aimed at the Government’s reaction to the theft of more than 600 thousand registry entries using the accounts of Migration Department employees, as well as communication – after the violation was detected, the public was informed only about 2 months later.

The commission promises to clarify who is responsible for this, why the cyberattack was not stopped, and what measures are being taken to prevent it from happening again.

“We are initiating a temporary parliamentary commission on the cyberattack against Lithuania. I would call this commission the commission for the deconstruction of constant lies. We must be sure and find out who is responsible for that lie,” said L. Kasčiūnas.

V. Čmilytė-Nielsen says that at the end of May, only due to media efforts did the story become public, but so far quite different versions from institution representatives and ruling politicians are heard about who and how it really happened.

“Responsibility was also shifted around. But it is obvious that at some point a political decision had to be made – whether to inform the affected residents or not. We see that a very serious security, theft crisis became only part of a bigger crisis: both non-disclosure, disrespect to residents and non-compliance with laws, as well as communication,” said the Chairwoman of the Liberal Movement, reminding that I. Ruginienė even after the prosecutor’s statement took a day off and was silent about the situation for several days.

“We see an inadequate reaction both from the head of the Government and from the ministers,” she added.

L. Savickas emphasized that the democrats have so far sought to gather all information as quickly as possible – the chronology of events and the Government’s and institutions’ “reactions, reasons, and arguments.”

According to him, several ministers and institution representatives, both in the Seimas hall and in the democratic faction, tried to answer questions, but “the more questions asked, the more arise, and answers are lacking.”
