„We are waiting for official data. We have contacted the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service and are awaiting official confirmation whether a natural or catastrophic meteorological event was recorded in our territory. Such confirmation would provide more legal opportunities to assist those affected,“ Vilnius district municipality mayor Robertas Duchnevičius announced on Facebook on Monday.

„We are considering declaring an emergency situation. After receiving the conclusions from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, we will assess the possibility of declaring an emergency situation in the most affected areas – Avižieniai and Riešė elderships,“ he said.
According to the mayor, declaring an emergency situation would allow seeking additional legal and financial solutions to compensate damages not only to residents but also to municipal budgetary institutions, elderships, legal entities, and non-governmental organizations.
„In such a case, the municipality could allocate more human and financial resources to help manage the storm’s aftermath, for example, by organizing the removal of fallen trees,“ R. Duchnevičius wrote.

As BNS reported, due to the storm that swept through on Saturday evening and Sunday night, firefighters responded 37 times to remove fallen trees. Most calls were received in Vilnius County, mainly to clear trees fallen onto the roadway.
According to R. Duchnevičius, the municipality is collecting information about the damage, and residents whose property was damaged during the storm or who have fallen trees on their premises are urged to contact their eldership.
„Elderships record all reports, and the collected information will be forwarded to the Vilnius district municipality mayor’s reserve fund usage commission. We hope that at least part of the damage experienced by residents due to damaged residential buildings can be compensated,“ the mayor wrote.
