Inflation was affected by “the prices of personal vehicle fuels and lubricants, which rose after having decreased in August 2025,” according to the INE report.
The service also noted that food and non-alcoholic beverage prices fell more slowly in August than in the same month last year.
The annual inflation rate more than doubles the 2% inflation target set by the European Central Bank (ECB), and this may put pressure on policymakers to raise interest rates, possibly at the next Governing Council meeting scheduled for September 9.

The Spanish central bank forecast in June that inflation in the country would reach 3.6 percent this year.
Across the eurozone, inflation was 2.9% in July, and Eurostat will publish preliminary August data on Tuesday.
