On August 22, the Russian monitoring channel “Locator Russia” reported about at least two drones in the Plesetsk area, as well as the Telegram channel “Supernova+”.

Due to a possible threat near the cosmodrome, the “Kovior” (lit. “Carpet”) plan was introduced, which provides for temporary flight restrictions. Local residents also published videos capturing the flight of two drones.
Why is this cosmodrome important?
The Plesetsk cosmodrome is the main northern Russian military cosmodrome. Satellites, specifically of the “Rassvet” series, as well as intercontinental ballistic missiles, are launched from it.
On the eve, Russia announced the temporary closure of several districts near the seas close to the Arkhangelsk region on August 26–27 due to planned missile launches. The type of missiles, launch site, and targets were not detailed.
“Rassvet” – the Russian “Starlink”
On July 20, the Russian company “Bureau 1440” announced the launch of the second group of communication satellites for the “Rassvet” project, which is considered the Russian equivalent of “Starlink”. The company launched the first satellites of this group into orbit back in March.
By the end of 2027, Russia plans to launch hundreds more such satellites into orbit.
Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the President of Ukraine on defense technology development, noted that the improvement of communication on the front is an obvious but not the main risk for Russian forces. In his opinion, the greatest danger lies in the fact that currently Ukraine cannot use “Starlink” for real-time drone control over Russian territory because the system does not operate there.
