In his speech at NASA’s space center in Houston, D. Trump noted that the new institution will be created based on the example of the famous US West Point Military Academy.
“It will be called the US Space Academy. This is a significant event,” said D. Trump as he signed the executive order establishing this school.
“It will serve both the US Space Force and NASA and the civilian spaceflight industry. The academy will attract, train, and graduate the best specialists in our country,” the president said.
D. Trump emphasized that the US Space Force, which is the sixth branch of the US armed forces, played an important role in recent American military operations in Venezuela and Iran.
The president did not disclose the location where the new academy will be built.
The US leader also presented the Congressional Space Honor Medal to the NASA Artemis 2 mission crew, which flew past the Moon in April.
Space is becoming an increasingly important strategic area for world powers – both militarily and technologically.
The United States is competing with China in the race to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030 – more than 50 years after humans first set foot on the lunar surface.
Last week, D. Trump promised a “golden age” in space, aiming to accelerate rocket launches, including missions to Mars and the Moon.
