He spoke on Saturday after the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) decided to remove “Nemuno aušra” from the ruling coalition and invite the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” to negotiations instead.
“We are certainly not pushing, but we are always ready to take responsibility for the state,” V. Sinkevičius told BNS on Saturday.
“We need to decide very specifically what this is. Is it just a mathematical operation, replacing one party with another, or do we really want an absolutely different approach than before? Of course, this will mean greater responsibility, but also more specifics for the decisions made,” he said.
As BNS wrote, discussions on reviewing the coalition were prompted some time ago by the vote of “Nemuno aušra” representatives against the establishment of the Kapčiamiestis training ground.
Some social democrats do not hide their dissatisfaction that the “aušriečiai” leader sharply criticizes some of their ministers, his behavior and speeches cause negative resonance in society, and he has also been convicted of antisemitism by a first-instance court.
After the 2024 Seimas elections, the social democrats had formed the ruling coalition with “Nemuno aušra” and the democrats, but last autumn they reorganized the majority, inviting the parliamentary faction of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and the Christian Families Union instead of the democrats.
Since April, V. Sinkevičius has been temporarily leading the Democratic Union, replacing Saulius Skvernelis, who resigned as party chairman and is suspected of corruption. He is no longer in the democratic faction in the Seimas either.
The democrats should elect a permanent leader by August.
Currently, the ruling majority in parliament has 80 representatives. A coalition of LSDP, democrats, and “farmers” would have 75 votes.
