Upon project completion, a new hospital building will be erected in Kaline (Riešės eldership), nursing and palliative care services will be expanded, and better conditions will be provided for patients to receive long-term care, according to a press release from the Vilnius district municipality.

“As the population grows, so does the demand for services. The number of elderly residents is especially increasing, so we must ensure that there are enough places for nursing and long-term care in the district. The new hospital will not only increase the number of beds but also offer specialized services for people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. This is important both for patients and their relatives,” says the municipality mayor Robert Duchnevič.
During the project, the existing buildings on the territory of the currently operating Riešė supportive treatment and nursing hospital are planned to be demolished and replaced with a modern four-story building.
The number of supportive treatment and nursing beds will increase from 30 to 62. Two nursing departments will also be established for patients with senile dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease – a total of 22 beds. Palliative care services will also be expanded.
The number of inpatient palliative care beds will increase from 7 to 16, and another 14 places will be allocated for a palliative care day hospital. Necessary medical equipment and a vehicle will also be purchased during the project.

Currently, the Riešė nursing and supportive treatment hospital operates in an old building – its main block was built before 1940. Some of the structures are wooden and worn out, and the building no longer meets modern requirements.
From 2020 to 2025, the number of residents over 65 years old in the Vilnius district increased by about 45%. The number of people requiring constant nursing or care is also growing, so the demand for long-term care services is also increasing.
According to the 2025 data from the State Health Insurance Fund and established norms, Vilnius district would need 217 supportive treatment and nursing beds, but currently there are 129. To meet the demand for palliative care, 21 beds would be needed, but currently there are 10.
The project value is 7.233 million EUR, of which about 2.567 million EUR is EU fund financing, and about 4.666 million EUR comes from the Vilnius district municipality budget.
The project implementation period is from July 2026 to July 2029.
