On Wednesday, August 5, at 6:00 PM, the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre (KKKC) Exhibition Halls will host a lecture evening from the event series “Ceramics Days,” inviting attendees to look at ceramics from two different perspectives – contemporary art and cultural heritage. Lecture on Tiles
In the first lecture, “Klaipėda Tiles – Witnesses to European Art Reproductions and Innovations,” archaeologist and researcher at the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology of Klaipėda University, Dr. Raimonda Nabažaitė, will reveal what archaeological tiles tell us about the city’s history, cultural ties, and daily life.
Dr. Raimonda Nabažaitė is one of Lithuania’s most renowned researchers of tile-making. Her doctoral dissertation on the phenomenon of tile-making in the European context was recognized as the best dissertation of the year in Lithuania, and the research results were published in a scientific monograph. The lecture will discuss how tiled stoves, widespread in Europe during the Middle Ages, changed people’s quality of life, how these technologies reached Klaipėda, and what impact they had on the daily lives of city residents and interior culture.
No less attention will be paid to the artistic value of the tiles. Archaeological findings testify that their decoration reflects motifs, graphics, and iconographic plots from the works of the most famous European artists of that time. This allows us to view Klaipėda tiles not only as household objects but also as unique cultural heritage artifacts, reflecting the dissemination of European art, technologies, and ideas.
Contemporary Ceramics Directions Presented
In the second lecture of the evening, “Today’s Lithuanian and World Ceramics Trends,” art doctor, interdisciplinary artist, and curator Rokas Dovydėnas will present the most relevant contemporary ceramics directions in Lithuania and worldwide. It will be discussed how ceramics today transcend the boundaries of traditional craft and become an interdisciplinary art field where design, technology, ecology, social themes, and artists’ personal experiences converge.

During the lecture, listeners will get acquainted with new forms of artistic expression and the works of the most prominent Lithuanian and foreign ceramists. It will be examined how ceramics today manifest not only as a field of applied art or craft but also as a form of contemporary art, reflecting current societal, cultural, and environmental issues.
Rokas Dovydėnas has been actively participating in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad since 1994. Since 2024, he has held the position of Head of the VDA Ceramics Department. The artist’s works are preserved in the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, the Lithuanian National Art Museum, and the MO Museum.
ABOUT THE EVENT SERIES “CERAMICS DAYS”
From August 5–8, KKKC organizes a series of ceramics events designed to reveal the art of ceramics from historical, artistic, and practical perspectives, i.e., to introduce Klaipėda residents and city guests to local ceramists, the history of ceramics in Klaipėda, and its role in the context of contemporary art.
The cycle includes: lectures on ceramics in the context of traditional and contemporary art; creative ceramics workshops and an educational tour of Klaipėda Old Town ceramists’ studios.
