It is reported that this program is the main project of the new London and Berlin military cooperation. The development of new generation missiles is planned to be completed by 2034.

2 missile variants

The project was presented in July at the NATO summit in Ankara. The program is valued at 35 billion euros and involves a total of 12 Alliance states. According to “Welt”, two missile variants are currently being considered:

  • Low-flying cruise missile capable of overcoming Russian air defense systems
  • Hypersonic missile, flying five times faster than the speed of sound.

The “Deep Precision Strike” project is based on German funding and British technological solutions. Following last year’s reforms, Berlin gained the ability to finance large defense programs without restrictions. The British government hopes that the DPS status will quickly transform from a political declaration announced in 2024 into a full-fledged armaments program.

“Now the situation has changed”

One of the publication’s sources stated that London and Berlin expect a “golden age” to begin in the field of defense. According to him, with the new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham coming to power, a new impetus for the development of bilateral relations is expected.

“For many years, the United Kingdom wanted Germany to take on a role in defense, but for a long time, this was politically impossible. Now the situation has changed,” said a British military source.

German and United Kingdom cooperation is increasingly expanding into the defense industry. In 2025, the German company “Rheinmetall” opened a plant in Telford, Britain, producing artillery systems and cannons for “Challenger 3” tanks. In addition, this company produces hundreds of “Boxer” armored vehicles for the British army.

In March 2026, the German small arms manufacturer “Heckler & Koch” acquired a machine manufacturing plant in Essex, Britain, for production expansion, and the company “Helsing” opened a factory for underwater reconnaissance drones in Plymouth, according to “The Moscow Times”.

Reducing Europe’s military dependence on America

As “Welt” notes, the DPS program is seen as a step towards reducing Europe’s military dependence on the US. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby criticized the ideas that European countries could replace the United States.

“The United States produces the best equipment – and we produce it on a scale that no competitor can achieve,” he wrote on the social network “X”.

What Hodges says

15min collage/Ukraine attacked Moscow

Former US Forces in Europe commander Ben Hodges called the decade-long plan to develop a missile absurd.

“Ukrainians already have drones capable of flying 2000 km and carrying a large warhead. We are not talking about people landing on the Moon, after all,” he stated.
