Serbia requested Mladić’s release
15min reminds that the Serbian authorities on Monday reiterated the request to release the Bosnian Serb figure Ratko Mladić, convicted of war crimes, due to his health condition so that he could receive treatment in Serbia.
Officials then warned that his death “could occur at any moment.”
84-year-old R. Mladić is serving a life sentence in The Hague. In 2017, he was found guilty of genocide and war crimes committed during the Bosnian war from 1992 to 1995.
His family had previously sought his release, claiming he is seriously ill and suffered a stroke in April, but the Residual Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals rejected this request in May.
The court stated at the time that R. Mladić is receiving appropriate medical care in prison.
In a renewed request to the court, Serbian Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić asked for R. Mladić to be transferred to the Belgrade war hospital, according to the statement.
R. Mladić’s son Darko Mladić told Serbian media on Friday that “this is a silent murder of my father,” claiming that prison doctors “completely stopped treatment.”
R. Mladić, who was arrested in Serbia in 2011, heard his verdict in 2021 after an appeal.
One of the crimes he is accused of is the killing of about 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in the Srebrenica region in July 1995.
The association of mothers who lost sons in Srebrenica condemned repeated calls to release R. Mladić, calling them provocations and stating that his release would be a huge injustice.
