According to police data, on August 21 at about 0:35, the body of a man born in 1960 was found in an apartment on Kranto Street in Panevėžys.
Officers detained R. Gilys, born in 2000 – the victim’s son. He was found to have a blood alcohol level of 2.03 per mille. The man was placed in custody, and a pre-trial investigation for murder was initiated.
Did not hide his face when brought to court
On Friday, the prosecutor’s office applied to the court to detain R. Gilys for the maximum term of three months. The court granted this request.
The suspect brought to court did not hide his face but was unwilling to speak.
The 26-year-old man is educated and works as a consultant at one of the banks in Panevėžys. Currently, R. Gilys was on vacation.
His lawyer Žygimantas Rutkauskas stated that the suspect partially admits his guilt. According to preliminary data, the father and son consumed alcohol together, and the conflict between them ended in violence.
“There was a drinking session with the father, and maybe because of alcohol some arguments and disagreements occurred. I would say that is the main reason. He acknowledges the circumstances, that he struck blows, but of course, he deeply regrets the current situation,” said Ž. Rutkauskas.

According to the lawyer, the number of blows will be determined by the pre-trial investigation. However, he said no knives or similar weapons were used.
“There are no knives involved. Fists, palms. I understand that he blames alcohol abuse because both he and his father drank all week,” the lawyer said.

Prosecutor: there were many blows
Prosecutor Loreta Liepienė, who is leading the pre-trial investigation, said that R. Gilys is suspected of a very serious crime. This was one of the reasons for requesting the maximum detention period.

“We requested detention for the maximum term – three months, since the person is suspected of committing a very serious crime – the murder of a family member. So far, according to initial data, we see that intense physical violence was used against the victim,” said L. Liepienė.
The exact cause of the man’s death is still being determined, but preliminary data from the crime scene inspection, according to the prosecutor, shows that there were many blows.

According to L. Liepienė, the suspect links his behavior to addictions. Law enforcement currently has no data on his previous criminal activities.
“The suspect admits guilt and says he may have acted this way due to alcohol and other substance dependencies. His intoxication was determined to be moderate, two per mille,” said the prosecutor.
R. Gilys will spend the next three months in custody. During the pre-trial investigation, the circumstances of the conflict, the number of blows inflicted on the victim, and the exact cause of his death will be clarified.
