Italy has temporarily suspended the Schengen agreement for free travel by sea and air with Spain, claiming that this is necessary to ensure the safety of its citizens.
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, random checks of travelers arriving from Spain were carried out at airports and seaports on Saturday. EFE reported that flights from Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga were checked at Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
In her post on the social network “X,” G. Meloni stated:
“Images from Ceuta once again showed how urgent Europe’s response to illegal immigration is.
For this reason, Italy, together with Denmark, initiated a letter signed by 22 European Union member states. It calls for joint action to strengthen external borders, address the problem of illegal migration, combat human traffickers, increase the effectiveness of returns, and eliminate any factors that may encourage further illegal arrivals.
This is an important signal: the position that Italy has long advocated is now supported by more and more European nations.
Defending the Union’s external borders is not the interest of a single country. It is a shared European responsibility.”

Sanchez spoke about the selfish behavior of EU countries

She made this statement after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused some EU countries, including Italy, of responding to the crisis “selfishly and divisively.”
He said that calls to suspend Spain’s membership in the Schengen area are “driven by prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interests.”
