The news of D. Dubauskas’s death shocked many, and messages of condolences to the artist’s relatives poured in on social networks. Many still called the famous man the Lithuanian Indian, and he was often recognized for his old-fashioned large-wheeled bicycle or distinctive style. Speaking about the painful loss to the portal Žmonės.lt, artist Monisha Modesta Butautytė said that if she had the money, she would build a memorial sculpture for Donatas in Užupis.
“He was not a political figure or some prominent person who saved the fate of the world from darkness; his activity took place on a subtle level, among art people and those who sought courage,” the creator told Žmonės.lt.
According to her, D. Dubauskas was not only a creative artist but also a very unique personality, whom she knew for about eight years.
“Donatas was a man with golden hands; he could create art from any material, fabric, or old object, essentially beauty in its form. He revived old things to new life, handmade bags, shoes, and accessories. His worldview and artistic education were incredibly broad, and he will always remain to me as a dignified, prominent, polite, calm person. Thousands of people were touched by his style’s courage, and the last time we met, a group of young guys ran up, shook his hand, and showered him with compliments for his style. The essence was not even his style but the whole aura, how he walked the streets of Vilnius and clearly showed what it means to be brave to be yourself. In my heart, he will remain the person who took my ‘standard’ view and rearranged reality…

His attitude towards “beauty, unique aesthetics” freed me from system-created standards. Donatas had a very good heart, and his intellect was something rare, and if you meet it, it is only once in a lifetime,” Monisha shared with Žmonės.lt.
The artist said she could not provide exact circumstances of D. Dubauskas’s death but revealed what might have accelerated his passing.
“Returning to his death, his body only died, but his artistic ambitions, inspiration, and consciousness remained and will always remain among art people. I was not near at the moment of death, so I cannot comment; Donatas’s sensitive heart under a strong body and bohemian lifestyle were the reasons that accelerated his passing,” Monisha Modesta Butautytė concluded the conversation with Žmonės.lt.
