American journalist and feminist movement icon Gloria Steinem has died

G. Steinem died on Wednesday in New York, surrounded by family and friends. “Gloria lived a meaningful life for nearly a century and fought for equality until the very end,” the statement said.

G. Steinem dedicated most of her life to defending women’s rights – advocating for equal opportunities in the workplace, the right to abortion, and sexual education. Her name became almost inseparable from the fight for women’s rights.

She also actively supported the pacifist movement and other liberal initiatives. For her long-term work in the field of human rights, G. Steinem was awarded the U.S. President’s Freedom Medal in 2013. She was also recognized with the United Nations Writers’ Association award and the National Gay Rights Defense Organization prize.
