Residents planning to link their professional future with Alytus and work in the city’s healthcare institutions will be able to receive a scholarship of up to 16 thousand euros annually.

This decision was made today by the Alytus City Municipality Council, which amended the procedure for providing funding to doctors and residents of missing specialties coming to work in the healthcare institutions of Alytus City Municipality. Increased financial support will cover the growing costs of residency studies and at the same time encourage young specialists to choose Alytus, according to a press release from Alytus City Municipality.
According to the newly approved procedure, a scholarship of up to 16 thousand euros per year can be awarded to residents studying in both state-funded and non-state-funded residency study places.
However, the size of the scholarship will be linked to the actual cost of studies – it cannot exceed the annual study cost specified in the residency study contract concluded between the university and the resident.
“With this decision of the Alytus City Municipality Council, we want to ensure that the cost of residency studies does not become an obstacle for young doctors to choose Alytus. By increasing financial support and adjusting it to the real cost of residency studies, we create more attractive conditions for residents and at the same time invest in the future of the city’s healthcare. Our goal is for more young, qualified doctors to work in Alytus after their studies, especially in those specialties that are most lacking in the city. This is not only financial assistance for the student – it is a long-term investment in accessible healthcare services for the residents of Alytus,” said Kristina Daugelevičienė, Deputy Mayor of Alytus City Municipality.
Until now, a resident studying in a non-state-funded place could be awarded a scholarship of no more than 10 thousand euros per year. These funds, based on the residency cost estimate, were allocated to cover the costs of residency studies at Lithuanian universities.

The decision to change the procedure was driven by the increased cost of residency studies in 2026. Some residency study programs cost more than 10 thousand euros per year, so under the previous procedure, the municipality could no longer fully compensate the study costs.
For example, the annual residency cost for medical studies at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences for individuals wishing to study in a non-state-funded place (at their own expense) this year was 8,810 Eur, and for citizens of countries other than the Republic of Lithuania, the European Union, and the European Economic Area without a permanent residence permit in Lithuania – 13 thousand Eur; for dentistry – respectively 13 thousand and 14 thousand Eur.
The annual cost of medical residency studies at Vilnius University was 9,800 Eur, and for dentistry – 14 thousand Eur.
Alytus City Municipality hopes that increased financial support will become an additional incentive for young medics to choose residency and later continue their professional activity in the capital of Dzūkija.
