Albanian police used tear gas to disperse a protest against a resort linked to Donald Trump

In Albania, protests have been ongoing since late May against the planned construction of a luxury hotel, linked to D. Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, in a nature reserve on the country’s coast.

In recent weeks, during several gatherings in the capital near the parliament, protesters also clashed with police and attempted to throw eggs at lawmakers.

On Thursday, large police forces were on duty from early morning, using water cannons and tear gas when protesters tried to break through security barriers and approach the parliament, according to AFP journalists on the scene.

The latest demonstration was held as parliament was set to approve a 4 million euro subsidy on Thursday for a Kanye West concert that took place earlier this month in Tirana.

Prime Minister Edi Rama pledged the funding, stating it was necessary to prevent the concert from being canceled.

This decision further angered protesters, who have been taking to the streets for over a month over the aforementioned luxury hotel project, raising concerns about potential corruption and a lack of government transparency.

The planned luxury tourist complex in the protected area and a nearby uninhabited island has attracted large crowds and international attention due to environmental concerns and its links to the D. Trump family.

No official data on the number of participants in the night protests has been released, but AFP journalists who attended the demonstrations estimated that thousands of people participated at least until mid-July.
