After mounting an unregistered quad bike, a drunk man was riding along the border patrol road

On Friday afternoon, the video surveillance system of the Purvėnai border post of the VSAT Varėna border unit recorded a middle-aged bearded man riding an ATV on the patrol road near the village of Versekėlė (Šalčininkai district). The motorcycle had no license plates, and the driver, wearing slippers, was without a helmet. The border guard immediately went to the scene of the violation.

The intruder was stopped by the border guards near the neighboring village of Ūta. It was found out that the motorcyclist was a 47-year-old local resident, although he had no personal identification documents. The man claimed he was riding to look around his own forest, believing that his permit to be in the state border protection zone was still valid.

VSAT officers communicating with the man from Šalčininkai suspected that he might be intoxicated. The motorcyclist emitted a strong smell of alcohol, his movements were uncoordinated, and his speech was incoherent. The border guards reported the incident to the Šalčininkai police station. Upon arrival of the police officers, the intoxication of the man who had hitched a ride on the patrol road was checked with a breathalyzer. The first breath test showed 2.35 per mille, the second 1.83 per mille of alcohol concentration, which is classified as a moderate level of intoxication.

In Lithuania, driving under the influence of alcohol with a moderate level of intoxication is subject to criminal liability, which may result in a fine, arrest, or imprisonment for up to one year. It is likely that the man from Šalčininkai will also lose his driving license for some time.

Moreover, the border guards established that the man was not listed in the VSAT register of persons authorized to be in the state border protection zone, border strip, or border waters, whose waters or shores form the external border, and he also did not present any identity documents. Because of this, VSAT officers issued him a summons to appear at the Purvėnai border post in a few days when his administrative offense case will be reviewed.

The intoxicated motorcyclist and his ATV were handed over to the police officers, who will further investigate the circumstances of the incident.

On the same day, officers of another VSAT Varėna border unit division, the Gintaras Žagunis border post, patrolling the Šalčininkai–Dieveniškės–Krakūnai road near the village of Širviai (Šalčininkai district), stopped a Nissan Murano car for inspection. The crossover with Lithuanian license plates was driven by a 47-year-old man from Vilnius.

As soon as he got out, the man smelled strongly of alcohol and had difficulty speaking. The border guards, who had a breathalyzer, tested the driver. The first test showed 2.35, the second 2.24 per mille. This corresponds to a moderate level of intoxication, for which criminal liability is prescribed by law.

VSAT officers informed the Šalčininkai police station about the detained drunk driver, and upon arrival of the police patrol, handed over the man from Vilnius and his car.
