At the capital’s airport, border guards detained a foreign woman who was preparing to fly to Austria without travel documents.

On Wednesday evening, officers of the Vilnius Airport Border Guard Post of the Vilnius Border Unit of the State Border Guard Service, patrolling near the boarding gates at the departure terminal, noticed a passenger. The young woman waiting for a flight to Vienna (Austria) presented a German citizen’s identity card, which had expired more than two years ago, and a boarding pass on her phone when asked by the border guards.
She purchased the plane ticket to Vienna in another person’s name, using an invalid German identity card.
Suspecting that the document presented did not belong to her, the woman was taken to the border guard post’s service premises.
Passengers flying on intra-EU flights are usually not checked, but border guards carry out selective checks based on profiling according to risk factors.
After officers conducted a personal and luggage inspection, no additional documents were found. During the conversation and inspection, the foreign woman admitted that the German document did not belong to her. She identified herself as a 24-year-old Afghan citizen and presented a document confirming this citizenship on her phone.

The foreign woman confirmed that she purchased the plane ticket to Vienna in another person’s name, using an invalid German identity card.
She also openly recounted the entire illegal journey from Afghanistan, which passed through four countries. From her homeland, the woman traveled on foot to Iran, from there reached Turkey by boat, flew from Turkey to Greece (Athens), and then on the night flight of August 25th – to Vilnius.
In Vilnius, the Afghan woman was placed in detention.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched at the Vilnius Border Unit of the State Border Guard Service for the illegal possession and use of another person’s document, led by a prosecutor from the 1st Division of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
For such a criminal offense, the law provides for a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment for up to four years.

On Friday, the court imposed a preventive measure – detention for one month.
