Now Iran demands that ships obtain permission to pass through the strait, citing security and sovereignty issues, and is considering a mechanism to impose service fees.
Ships that do not comply with these instructions often become targets of Iranian strikes, while the US sporadically bombs the Iranian coast to challenge Tehran’s control of the strait.
