As reported by the Facebook page “Weather and Climate in Lithuania,” in the Joniškis district, Butkūnai village, located about 15 kilometers northeast of Joniškis, residents photographed hailstones of impressive size. Some of them exceeded 2 centimeters in diameter, and such a size is already considered very large hail according to meteorological criteria, classified as extreme meteorological phenomena.

Based on radar data, this hail fell in the mentioned area on July 31 around 19:35–19:40. Stormy clouds were moving over the northern part of Lithuania at that time, and meteorologists had warned before the storms that hail could fall in the northeastern districts.
Meteorologists urge residents who have recorded hailstones to place a well-known object next to them when photographing – for example, a 1 or 2 euro coin. This allows for a more accurate assessment of the actual size of the hailstones and helps analyze the intensity of the storm.
