Audra 'tore apart' Paulius Morkūnas' clinic: after contacting insurance companies – yet another unpleasant surprise

Paulius Morkūnas told the portal Žmonės.lt that a storm that raged more than a week ago destroyed the advertising sign of his veterinary clinic in Kaunas – it eventually fell down. All this happened during the day, although Paulius himself was not at the clinic then, so colleagues who were working at the time informed him about the unpleasant incident.

“The storm came, tore everything apart… When it happened, at first it was very scary, but then you rethink – thank God no one was hurt, because we were working at the time, there were cars and people. Those panels are heavy – if they fell on a person or cars, the damage would have been very great,” said P. Morkūnas. “Property is property, but human lives are incomparable things. Everything else recovers, it’s just expenses.”

Speaking about the expenses, Paulius revealed that the cost of the mentioned advertisement was considerable – 5000 euros. However, after contacting insurance companies, he found out that the damage caused by the storm would not be compensated, as it turned out that such advertising signs need to be insured additionally.

“I didn’t even think there would be such a situation – I am insured with two insurance companies, and it turns out that both require additional checkboxes. It seems all property is insured, you get a package when you insure, but it turns out that those contracts need to be read very carefully, and we didn’t read them somewhere. Because as far as dealing with insurance goes – when something non-standard happens, you don’t really get anything out of them,” P. Morkūnas regretted, speaking with the portal Žmonės.lt.

Paulius added that the insurance companies themselves had not warned him that advertising sign insurance was not included in the package.

“There was no such offer that advertising must be insured. Now we are thinking, we are laughing with colleagues – what else is not insured? We need to review the contracts – it’s hard to say what that insurance even covers, as I understand it, only the building itself,” said the veterinarian.

Currently, an additional insurance contract has already been signed, covering such cases as well. When asked if the premium would change significantly, Paulius was open.

“It changes quite a bit, perhaps about 20 percent, because probably the insurance companies themselves see that conditions in Lithuania are worsening and their companies’ expenses will also increase. So automatically they look at this, re-evaluate it, because under other conditions, such prices did not exist, and now they will change upwards – it is understandable why,” P. Morkūnas pondered.

This story also brought other lessons. Because when installing a new sign, it also did not go without serious changes.

“You see what is happening with our climate – storms are changing, becoming more frequent. Now, when we redid the advertisement, the company re-evaluated everything – they said it would get worse and we need to prepare for it, do our homework, so they installed additional reinforcements. What used to hold before, we will no longer have such conditions,” P. Morkūnas shared with the portal Žmonės.lt.

Paulius emphasized that, unfortunately, there is nothing left but to adapt to unpleasant climate changes.

“It’s a painful thing, but Lithuania is moving towards the things that are happening in other European countries. A squall hits, tears everything apart, losses are incurred, and then – it’s calm again, the sun shines. This is very surprising, but such things will definitely still happen in Lithuania, and we, Lithuanians, need to brace ourselves for everything. When something is announced – maybe listen to the services and stay at home. It’s not for nothing that it’s announced. Of course, if it doesn’t come true, we Lithuanians laugh, why wasn’t it – oh, nothing happened, what are they announcing here. But it’s always better to prepare and know what to prepare for. And if it doesn’t happen, then be glad that your house roof didn’t fly off,” P. Morkūnas concluded the conversation with Žmonės.lt.
