Asked on Wednesday about a possible meeting, D. Trump told the “New York Post”: “Yes, I would like to meet him,” adding that “we will probably meet sometime, depending on how things turn out.”
However, Iran’s top diplomat downplayed such a possibility in an interview with Lebanese media shown on Thursday evening, stating that it was not realistic.
“I saw a report that seemed to say that he (D. Trump) stated he was ready for a meeting or wanted to hold a meeting,” A. Araghchi told Al Mayadeen television channel.
“I think we should be realistic, think and live in the real world,” he said.
Ayatollah M. Khamenei was appointed Iran’s supreme leader in March, after his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei was killed in US and Israeli strikes on February 28.

A. Araghchi said in the interview that during the attacks that took A. Khamenei’s life, he was in the leader’s office where he died, but in another wing of the building, so he was unharmed.
These attacks prompted Iran to retaliate by launching missiles and drones against Israel and US allies in the Persian Gulf region.
A. Araghchi also stated that the new supreme leader “is fully, closely and effectively involved in the country’s affairs and has full control.”
According to him, M. Khamenei’s absence from public view since his appointment was due to “security considerations” related to the war, which has been halted by a fragile ceasefire since April 8.
