Well-known photographer sells childhood home – revealed heart-wrenching reason and why he decided to raise the price

V. Žilinskas, who is selling a house in Zarasai, stated that his parents lived there until now, but the loss of his father prompted the family to make a sensitive but necessary decision.

“From the moment I moved out of Zarasai and relocated to Vilnius, my parents lived in that house, but fate had it that my father passed away this January after a long illness, leaving my mother alone in that house. We decided to take my mother to live with us in Vilnius, as it’s difficult for her alone at her mature age, with stairs, a lot of things, a garden, and so on. So, because the house was left empty, and my selfish desire to preserve those childhood homes is not very rational, as I won’t be able to drive there or find the time.

And I want those homes to be in hands that can cherish them, take care of them, weed the gardens there, maintain the orchard and everything else my father did all his life. That’s why I want to find cool buyers and pass it on to another family. And it’s a bit too far for me from Vilnius, still 150 kilometers, so even if I tried very hard, I would still have to live between two cities, and with our jobs, my travels, my freelancing, it turns out that something has to be sacrificed,” V. Žilinskas told Žmonės.lt.

When asked if he wouldn’t want to keep these homes for the future, the photographer said he had thought about it, but implementing this plan would be difficult.

“There were such thoughts, but it turns out that keeping it for the future means someone still has to take care of those homes now. There are thoughts, as years pass and one gets older, of moving somewhere further away from the city, but it’s unclear if that will be in five or ten years. Then perhaps we will build our own homes, newer, different ones, and create our new history there from scratch,” the well-known man shared.

The listed price of the house is 99 thousand euros, but the photographer’s initial plan was different. V. Žilinskas does not hide that the amount had to be adjusted after unexpected advice from outside.

“With the price, it’s such an interesting thing… I planned to sell that house for a bit cheaper, but when I shared that information with a few local Zarasai residents, they said: ‘don’t joke, more!’. So, you know, here again, there’s one amount you want to get and how much you value it, because it’s still an emotional price, it’s sentiment, and it’s priceless… But the fact is that the price is as listed, and if a buyer appears, you can talk and negotiate individually with each buyer,” V. Žilinskas stated.

According to him, there is no shortage of interest in the house, and he plans to hold an open house on June 9 for everyone who wants to visit and inspect it.

“To be honest, the most interesting story was that even before I posted the ad, maybe a couple of months ago, I mentioned in a Zarasai Facebook group, in some discussion, that I was planning to sell my house, but since Zarasai is a small town, everyone there knows both where my house is and what it looks like. So, just after such a comment, sharing a post, I received a few inquiries. And now I posted the ad yesterday, so yes, there are calls, but most initially only ask if it’s possible to view it. And since I myself am in Vilnius, I will hold an open house on June 9, next week, when everyone can come and view it,” the photographer shared the important information.

According to V. Žilinskas, the new owners will be able to move into the house immediately. And for those who want to update the interior to their taste, it will be very easy to do so, as the building itself does not require major renovations, but only cosmetic changes, if others desire them.

“If people want to renovate, it’s a very good base, a good start, because although the house is not new, my father built it with his own hands with my mother, everything there is very solidly made, we used to joke when my father was still alive that this house would withstand even a nuclear war. So it’s a very good starting base for both renovations and living there immediately, if such a slightly old-school vibe suits you,” the photographer mused.

According to the well-known man, Zarasai is a great place to live, where you can save a lot of money if you work remotely.

Zarasai is a very small town. I remember walking from home to the city center in five minutes. And by car, you can reach anything in Zarasai in a few minutes, so it’s a very convenient city to live in. Plus, it’s nice that there are many lakes, a lot of everything, it’s very peaceful, and as I used to joke – an ideal place to raise children and grow old. Because it’s absolute peace and everything you need. And another plus is that the standard of living is very good because prices are low, there’s not much to spend money on. So, in fact, compared to Vilnius or some larger cities, here with a Vilnius salary, if you’re a freelancer and can work remotely, you simply won’t know what to do with your money in Zarasai,” V. Žilinskas concluded the conversation with Žmonės.lt.

He also shared the house listing on the social network “Facebook”, where he described the house’s characteristics in more detail.
