In the summer of 2023, Lithuanian Valerijus Polkovnikov, who fought for Ukraine in Bakhmut, died in a Kyiv hospital. A friend who reported his death said that V. Polkovnikov died from injuries sustained in Bakhmut, but the Lithuanian embassy in Ukraine did not confirm information about the injuries. It was later clarified that the wounds were not the main cause of death.
In 2024, Lithuanian soldier Tadas Tumas, born in 1981 and known by the call sign “Giant,” who fought against Russian occupiers in Ukraine, died. He served in the 92nd brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces.

In 2025, a young volunteer from Biržai, Tomas Valentėlis, died. He was only twenty years old. The Lithuanian served in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion since August 2024. T. Valentėlis died during a combat mission near the city of Kupiansk. It was his first military mission in Ukraine. His body was retrieved from the combat zone only after some time during a special operation.
