AfD gained popularity by capitalizing on public sentiments related to growing concerns about migration at a time when the largest European economy’s growth is stalling. The party also calls for reducing aid to Ukraine and renewing economic cooperation with Russia.
K. Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, who has mediated efforts to thaw US-Russia relations, will meet with AfD national leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, a Reuters source reported.
Given AfD’s opposition role, this meeting is expected to have little impact on actual German policy but would further highlight close ties between this far-right party and Moscow, the portal writes.
The party advocates lifting economic sanctions on Russia and resuming operations of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines.

These pipelines were laid to supply Russian gas to Germany via the Baltic Sea, but both were damaged in explosions in September 2022, which German investigators call acts of sabotage. Kyiv denies any responsibility for the incident.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously ruled out the possibility of resuming supplies via the Nord Stream pipelines in the future.
Representatives of AfD and K. Dmitriev declined to comment on the planned meeting.
The organizers reportedly hoped that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would also participate in the meeting, but a US official told the news agency that American diplomats are unaware of such a meeting.
