The Prime Minister spoke about whether the heating allowance will be reinstated

According to Mindaugas Sinkevičius, compensation for residents is a more targeted measure.

“No, we do not plan to apply heating benefits so horizontally during the heating season, because we have already said several times – a horizontal measure for everyone means that (it is applied – BNS) regardless of whether a person earns a lot,” M. Sinkevičius told journalists on Friday.

“It is better to assess help to people, consumers using centralized heating systems through compensation. If a person’s income, property shows that he cannot afford to pay for heating, the state comes to help. I think this is socially fairer,” the prime minister added.

The head of government emphasized that the compensation procedure is now working quite well, but said he hopes that the system through which applications are submitted will not experience major disruptions.

“I think that the way it works is not bad. I hope that the Social Support Information System, so-called SPIS, will not crash or break down, because in the past we had a situation when applications and certain assessments (come – BNS) after a month or two. I have already drawn the attention of the ministry’s (Social Security and Labour – BNS) leadership, I hope the system will work smoothly,” M. Sinkevičius explained.

The prime minister said that due to rising energy resource prices, heating will become more expensive this season, so the amount allocated for compensation will also increase.

“Likewise, we talk with the finance minister that due to rising fuel prices, the need for money for compensation will probably inevitably be greater,” M. Sinkevičius said.

After the parliament abolished the 9% VAT relief for centralized heating, hot water, and firewood last year, heat prices increased by about 12 percent from January just because of that.
