This EU support is exceptional: other new educational institutions currently being built by the Vilnius municipality are being constructed without EU funding. Moreover, this is the largest EU financing currently allocated to projects managed by the Vilnius Development Company, the city’s public interest development and management company.

The Bajorų Road progymnasium project is now awaiting a building permit. Once the permit is obtained, a public procurement for construction will be announced. The final value of the construction works will depend on the price offered by the winning bidder. Construction work is expected to start in the second quarter of 2027 and be completed in 2028.
“Once the project is implemented, one of the largest new progymnasiums in Vilnius will appear on Bajorų Road. It will help address the shortage of educational places in the rapidly growing part of the city and will also become an important attraction center for the local community. The allocated European Union funding is an important boost for the project, which will allow families from Bajorų and surrounding districts to study closer to home in a new, modern educational institution,” emphasized Vilnius city mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
The new progymnasium on Bajorų Road will be intended for students from grades 1 to 8. It will accommodate over 900 students. It is planned to equip general education classrooms, modern STEAM spaces, “Fab Lab” workshops, natural science laboratories, large and small sports halls, a versatile event space, and technology workshops.
“The residents of Bajorų have been waiting for the school for a very long time. I am glad that with the support of the European Union and the state, the process is moving forward and once we receive the building permit, we will start the procurement this year. Thus, in a couple of years, a spacious, fantastic progymnasium for more than 900 students will rise. And nearby, at Santariškės, we are already building a gymnasium so that residents of Northern Vilnius have more school options,” said Vilnius deputy mayor Vytautas Mitalas.

The road to the creation of this school was longer than planned. An open architectural competition was announced back in 2022. After signing the design contract and during the design process, the deadlines had to be extended several times due to changing construction requirements and other circumstances. During the design phase, the detailed plan was adjusted, the height of the designed building was increased, a canopy was designed under the main part of the school, cadastral measurements and registration of Bajorų Road were carried out, and documents necessary for the reconstruction and connection of the heating networks were arranged.
“The road to this stage was longer and more complicated than planned, but today we can confidently say that the project has reached the final stretch, and the allocated EU support provides a solid foundation to move on to the construction phase,” emphasized Inga Liutkevičiūtė, head of the Project Management Department at Vilnius Development Company.
The progymnasium on Bajorų Road will be approximately 12,500 square meters in area and three stories high. The building volume is divided by terraces and balconies facing the green spaces of the plot. The facades are planned to have finishes reminiscent of natural material textures. A solar power plant will be installed on the roof.
The greenery growing on the site became one of the most important factors influencing the plot planning decisions. To preserve as much greenery as possible, the sports field was moved to the southern part of the plot, the locations of parking lots and pedestrian paths were adjusted, and new greenery is planned to strengthen ecological connections and biodiversity.
